Krystal Nurse

General Assignment Reporter

Krystal Nurse is a general assignment reporter for Straight Arrow News based out of Detroit, Michigan. She covers a wide array of topics, unafraid to ask hard questions to help the public understand the story at hand.

Krystal started her career as a journalist in southern New Jersey, reporting on education and municipal issues. She later relocated to Michigan at the start of the pandemic, where she focused on race, housing and other diversity issues. There, she earned multiple second place or honorable mention awards for her reporting on a run-down apartment complex in Lansing and condemned properties plaguing Lansing. She earned her highest honor — finalist for the Livingston Award in local news — in 2023 when she extensively and deliberately covered Indigenous issues for the Lansing State Journal. Krystal moved on to USA TODAY where she covered evening breaking news, often collaborating with coworkers on major stories.

Krystal is an active member of Investigative Reporters and Editors, where she attends training sessions and the annual conference each year. She’s personally vested in helping younger journalists enter the industry, craft their pitches and expand their knowledge. She’s also active with the National Press Foundation, having served as a fellow in the Widening the Pipeline inaugural program in 2022.

She earned her bachelor’s degree at Saint Peter’s University and is a proud Peacock. Krystal can be seen running through her neighborhood, working out at her favorite gym, listening to EDM music or playing with her corgi, Oscar.
