Maggie Gordon
Senior Storytelling Editor
Maggie Gordon is the senior storytelling editor for Straight Arrow News. She believes in the power of character-driven reporting and public service journalism. (But to be honest, she also loves a love story.)
She began her career as a journalist as editor-in-chief of her high school paper, and a student intern at the Times Union in Albany, New York, before attending Syracuse University, where she graduated with a degree in newspaper journalism. Her work has brought her to six states, covering education, business, local government and features as a reporter, columnist and editor.
She has been based in Houston, Texas, since 2015, where she spent several years at the Houston Chronicle before becoming a founding member of the nonprofit news startup Houston Landing. Her work in Houston has generated significant impact: She pushed the city to refund a widow more than $5,000 for erroneous water bill fees; her investigation into the cityโs public library system led the mayor to initiate sweeping reforms; her columns resulted in a commitment from the state of Texas committed to rebuild the home of an elderly woman whose Hurricane Harvey-related repairs had been delayed by more than six years due to paperwork and processing issues. She won some awards along the way as well.
Maggie grew up on a cow farm in Upstate New York where she spent her summers cutting, raking, tedding and baling hay. These days, she lives in Houstonโs East End with her husband and their three young children. When sheโs not reporting and editing, you can find her pushing a stroller to her favorite coffee shop, supervising pint-sized bakers in her familyโs โToddler Test Kitchenโ or tending to her Little Free Library.
