Hundreds of thousands of people are supporting a tongue-in-cheek “Denmarkification” petition in a comedic effort to “buy” California from the United States. The campaign titled “Let’s Buy California from Trump – Denmark’s Next Big Adventure” is a satirical response to President Donald Trump’s remarks about the U.S. acquiring Greenland from Denmark.
The petition, with tag lines including “Mickey Mouse in a Viking helmet,” “from hygge to Hollywood” and “bike lanes in Beverly Hills,” claims its crowdfunding goal is $1 trillion, “give or take a few billion.”

What are the selling points of the satirical petition?
The people behind the campaign are pitching five major incentives to Danes: sunshine galore, tech dominance, avocado toast forever, to protect the free world and Disneyland, which it proposes to rename “Hans Christian Andersenland.”
The petition also states Trump might sell California to Denmark because “he isn’t exactly California’s biggest fan.”
What did Greenland and Denmark’s leaders say to Trump?
Before taking office for his second term, Trump said he would not rule out the use of military force to seize control of Greenland.
Neither Denmark nor Greenland were fond of the idea.
The Danish prime minister has called Trump’s idea “absurd.”
Earlier in February 2025, Greenland’s parliament passed a bill that bans political parties from receiving contributions “from foreign or anonymous contributors” after Trump expressed his wish that the U.S. take over Greenland.
While the petition is just for fun with perks for donors like a “lifetime supply of California grown avocados,” around 200,000 people have signed it so far.
