One man is in custody following Saturday’s shooting at Virginia State University. Chesterfield County police told WTVR Camron Harris, 19, was discovered in a dorm closet on the VSU campus.
Officers responded about 1:30 a.m. to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street and found five people with gunshot wounds outside university dormitories, Chesterfield County police said. University officials said the shooting happened near the Quad Annexes.
WTVR reported all five victims were taken to nearby hospitals. One person, who initially had injuries described as life-threatening, was listed in critical condition, police said. The other four victims had injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The university originally said the shooting involved multiple suspects and asked people to avoid the area and follow law enforcement instructions. A significant police presence remained on campus Saturday morning as investigators processed the scene.
Chesterfield County police are leading the investigation. Virginia State University police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are assisting.
Virginia State University is a historically Black university in Ettrick, about 24 miles south of Richmond. Classes were scheduled to begin Monday.
