A new book is shedding light on how ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos reacted to former President Joe Biden’s appearance after a July 5 interview.
According to author Chris Whipple, Stephanopoulos called Biden “heartbreaking up close.” The interview took place just days after Biden’s presidential debate against then-candidate Donald Trump.

Whipple noted that the ABC interview was part of a White House effort to reassure the public after Biden’s widely criticized debate performance. Whipple described Biden as “hoarse and semi-coherent” throughout the interview, adding that Stephanopoulos was “disappointed” by the president’s performance.
In his new book, “Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden, Harris, and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History,” Whipple reveals a conversation with Stephanopoulos after the interview.
“Stephanopoulos questioned the president gently, like a grandson. Afterward, when I asked the ABC anchor by email for his impressions, he replied: ‘Heartbreaking up close.'”

Stephanopoulos questioned Biden’s ability to serve
This isn’t the first time Stephanopoulos has expressed doubts about Biden’s ability to serve. Just days after the interview, a video first shared by TMZ showed Stephanopoulos telling a man he didn’t think Biden could serve another four years.
The ABC anchor later said he regretted those comments in a statement to Puck News.
Books about Biden published in April
Whipple’s book is just one of several making headlines this month, with several others discussing behind-the-scenes actions from democratic leaders during Biden’s time in the Oval Office.
Another book, written by NBC’s Jonathan Allen and The Hill’s Amie Parnes, examines the Biden campaign and the Democratic Party’s transition and opposition to Vice President Kamala Harris before she ultimately replaced Biden as the nominee.
