Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., better known as rapper Snoop Dogg, is facing backlash after questioning LGBTQ+ representation in children’s films during a recent podcast appearance. His comments specifically referenced Pixar’s 2022 movie “Lightyear,” which included Disney’s first same-sex couple.
On the podcast “It’s Giving…” hosted by Sarah Fontenot, Snoop recalled watching the film with his grandson.

“Why is my grandson in the middle of the movie like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She a woman.’ Oh s— … I didn’t come in for this s— … I just came to watch the goddamn movie,” he said.
The controversy around ‘Lightyear’
The film “Lightyear” focused on the backstory of Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story franchise. It made headlines for including a same-sex kiss — a moment that was nearly cut from the theatrical release before Pixar employees pushed to reinstate it.
Snoop admitted the scene made him uncomfortable. “I’m like … scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of sh— that I don’t have an answer for,” he said.
The exchange happened as Fontenot discussed what she called a “single mother epidemic,” claiming single mothers were raising men with more feminine traits.
Snoop disagreed with that framing. Instead, he suggested LGBTQ+ themes are showing up more often in mainstream media.
“These are kids. We have to show that at this age?” he asked. “They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”
Backlash from comments
Snoop’s remarks have spread online.
“Snoop Dogg hosts livestreams of [Grand Theft Auto] & [Call of Duty] gameplays, introducing guns and violence which [I’m] sure his grandson has seen.. but he draws the line at a gay couple,” one user wrote.
Another user replied, “And won’t he have to explain the type of Music Snoop made to his grandson?”
The rapper frequently makes music about weed culture and partying, but themes have shifted over time. Other users pointed out Snoop’s 1993 murder charge when he and his bodyguard were involved in a confrontation in Los Angeles. The dispute escalated before a man was shot and killed. Both Snoop and his bodyguard were charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy, but charges were acquitted in 1996.
Backlash has also reached Australia, where a local news outlet reported calls to drop him as the headline entertainer for the Australian Football League’s Grand Final, though the league defended the rapper.
The AFL has dealt with similar controversy before. The league issued a temporary ban to a player this month for using an anti-gay slur.
“We had an investigation … it is behaviour that is not acceptable,” said AFL CEO Andrew Dillon per ESPN. “Izak Rankine has admitted that, Adelaide Crows have made a statement on that, that’s what’s important.”
As of Monday, Snoop will still be performing as the pre-game entertainer for the event.
