One person has died, and 15 are missing or unaccounted for, after Saturday’s flash-flooding in Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch. Earlier on Sunday, more than 20 had been reported missing.
According to Grand Canyon National Park, the person who died was a 46-year-old male whose body was recovered near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River. Grand Canyon National Park said it will implement Stage 4 water restrictions on the South Rim starting at noon Monday.

Flooding began Saturday afternoon and quickly forced air evacuations of more than 60 people. No injuries have been reported.
Erica Viola told The Associated Press she was at Bright Angel Campground when the rain began. She said she and about 50 other hikers watched the creek rise and then debris start to flow by, including what looked like a bunkhouse. She told the AP she and the rest of the group were airlifted to safety.
NPS said many footbridges have been washed away. Many popular campsites and trails are closed until further notice.
“Additional thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are possible today and Monday, with potential for more flash flooding, debris flows and rockfall,” the statement read.
