Authorities in Atlanta, Georgia responded to an active shooter by the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday, Aug.8. According to WSB-TV, a DeKalb County police officer was killed.
Just after 5 p.m. Friday afternoon, the Emory University College of Arts and Design posted on X that the shooter was near Emory Point, a mixed-use development near the university campus, as well as the main site of the CDC. Later, local news reported authorities set up a perimeter near a CVS at Emory Point.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said the shooter “fired at law enforcement and potentially the CDC” during a press conference covered by USA Today.

The Atlanta Police Department confirmed on X that the shooter was dead and that there was no active threat to the public. They said the shooter acted alone.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp released a statement on the shooting. In it, he wrote that for the second time this week, “deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians,” referencing the shooting at Fort Stewart Army base that happened on Wednesday, Aug. 6, near Savannah, Georgia.

Photos of the area showed dozens of police and other emergency responders at the scene.
University officials are continuing to tell students to shelter in place and avoid the Emory Point area.
A video posted on X allegedly recorded dozens of gunshots. The person who posted the videos said it was recorded at their apartment located near Emory.
