Barbie’s evolution toward greater diversity continues, with Mattel now announcing that the doll is to collaborate with an Indian designer for the first time ever. This special edition doll will celebrate the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, which begins in a few weeks.
The toy company teamed up with renowned fashion designer Anita Dongre to create the look.
Dongre, inspired by her roots in Jaipur, designed the doll’s intricate outfit. She emphasized how meaningful it was to design a doll that represents today’s modern Indian woman, strong, empowered and proud of her heritage.
