Tri-Union Seafoods of California is recalling cans of tuna, due to the risk of botulism. The tuna is sold at major retailers nationwide under brand names Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B and Trader Joe’s.
How can somebody become infected or sick?
The company said the easy-open pull tab lid has a defect that might cause the seal to leak and possibly become contaminated with botulism. The bacteria is a potentially deadly form of food poisoning.

Has anybody become ill?
So far, no sickness has been reported in customers. However, Tri-Union is pulling tuna cans off store shelves out of an abundance of caution. Medical experts said the symptoms of the illness include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle weakness, blurry vision, difficulty speaking and trouble breathing.

The tuna is sold at popular stores including Costco, Walmart, Kroger, Safeway and Publix, among others, in 27 states. The Food and Drug Administration has published a list of the specific cans of tuna affected including codes, labels and best-if-used-by dates on its website, fda.gov.
