Ovechkin scored again Tuesday night against Winnipeg, giving him 889 goals all-time.

He needs five goals to tie Gretzky’s record of 894 and six goals to break it.

It’s a bit of a race against time, as Washington only has 11 games left in the regular season. If Ovechkin does not break the record this season, fans must wait until October 2025 for the countdown to continue.

In Washington, they refer to Ovechkin, who wears number 8, as “The Great 8,” while Gretzky has long been referred to as “The Great One.”

ONE OF HOCKEY’S GREATEST RECORDS IS CLOSER TO GETTING BROKEN.

ALEX OVECHKIN IS GETTING CLOSER TO SNAPPING WAYNE GRETZKY’S RECORD FOR MOST GOALS EVER SCORED IN A CAREER.

OVECHKIN SCORED AGAIN LAST NIGHT FOR THE WASHINGTON CAPITALS AGAINST WINNIPEG, GIVING HIM 889 GOALS ALL-TIME.

HE IS FIVE GOALS SHY OF TYING GRETZKY’S RECORD OF 894 AND SIX GOALS WAY FROM BREAKING IT.

IT’S A BIT OF A RACE AGAINST TIME AS WASHINGTON ONLY HAS ELEVEN GAMES LEFT IN THE REGULAR SEASON.

SO IF OVECHKIN DOES NOT BREAK THE RECORD THIS SEASON, FANS WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL OCTOBER AND NEXT SEASON FOR THE COUNTDOWN TO CONTINUE.

SAFE TO SAY, HE’S EVENTUALLY GOING TO DO IT, THE QUESTION IS WHEN.

IN WASHINGTON THEY REFER TO OVECHKIN, WHO WEARS NUMBER 8, AS **THE GREAT  8**,  WHILE GRETZKY IS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE “”GREAT ONE””
