A Boeing 767-300 cargo plane overran a runway after landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, leaving five people dead and five injured. The crash prompted airport officials to close all runways and taxiways and issue a ground stop.

In a press conference Sunday afternoon, Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz confirmed the deaths and added all five of those injured were taken to the hospital.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft overran the runway around 2 p.m. local time after arriving from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The FAA said it will investigate.

Miami International Airport said Prime Air Flight 7598 became disabled at the northwest end of the airport after overrunning the airport’s diagonal runway. The airport said all runways and taxiways were closed as of 3 p.m. and advised travelers to check directly with their airlines before heading to the airport.

Amazon confirmed the plane was theirs but operated by 21 Air. In a statement, spokesperson Kelly Nantel shared the plane had an “incident” while trying to land.

“This is a fast-moving situation and we’re still gathering details. We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened,” Nantel said.

This is a developing story.
