At least 70 people have died, and multiple buildings collapsed after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia Monday morning.
The quake occurred around 8:34 a.m. local time, about 3 miles east of San José del Palmar, Colombia, in the province of Chocó, but was felt across the country and in nearby Ecuador.
Officials say dozens of buildings were damaged, and some even collapsed with people inside, according to NBC News.
“We have just experienced a severe seismic event in the department of Chocó,” Gov. Nubia Carolina Cordoba-Curi said on X. “We are concerned about aftershocks. Although the epicenter was in San José del Palmar, in the capital Quibdó there are injuries and severe damage to buildings. We are already conducting the damage assessment to issue the first official report.”
Meanwhile, in Bogota, the capital city of Colombia, the mayor says there are some cracks in local buildings, but they “do not pose a risk to the buildings’ structures.”
