Behind the numbers

Cracker Barrel operates 660 restaurants and tested the remodeled design in only four locations. The company planned a $600 to $700 million transformation effort to attract younger customers before suspending it. Its stock reportedly declined by more than 11% following pushback.

Global impact

The Cracker Barrel story reflects global challenges brands face when modernizing legacy imagery, which often carries cultural weight with local customers. International observers can see a trend in pushback to rapid change in iconic brands.

History lesson

Logo changes by major American brands, such as Gap in 2010, have similarly faced backlash and reversals after negative public feedback. Heritage branding tends to pose high risk when altered rapidly.
