Full story

Former special counsel John Durham, who spent years investigating the origins of the FBI’s probe into alleged links between Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia, told federal officials investigating James Comey that he found no evidence to justify criminal charges of false statements and obstruction against the former FBI director. The disclosure comes in a report by ABC News on Monday, which cites sources familiar with the matter.

Durham’s findings

Durham’s statements come in a reported conversation with federal prosecutors in August.

After a two-month review, prosecutors in Virginia reportedly reached the same conclusion as both Durham and federal prosecutors in Washington, D.C. – that there was no concrete evidence to pursue charges. Prosecutors advised against moving forward, ABC reported.

Despite those recommendations, Lindsey Halligan, an attorney pursuing the case on behalf of the Trump administration, has vowed to continue pressing charges against Comey.

Durham’s findings are detailed in a 306-page report, which, according to ABC News, explains why the legal threshold for a federal prosecution was not met and why charging Comey would be improper.

Trump warns of more prosecutions

Trump dismissed the findings and indicated that additional prosecutions could follow.

“There’ll be others. Look, that’s my opinion – they weaponized the Justice Department like nobody in history. What they’ve done is terrible.” Trump said, following the indictment of Comey. “And so, I would – I hope – frankly, I hope there are others, because you can’t let this happen to a country.”

Vice President JD Vance issued a similar warning, suggesting more legal actions could be forthcoming.

Grand jury developments

According to ABC News, a grand jury found no evidence that Comey lied to Congress about the intelligence report related to the Russia investigation. However, the jury examined two separate allegations that Comey leaked information to the media, including through a former attorney, Daniel Richman, who allegedly acted as an intermediary in sharing details of the Clinton investigation.

Comey has denied the charges and maintains his innocence in the case.
