A specific date for the event has not been determined, as organizers said in the social media post that “plans are still being worked on.”

Not a new form of activism

Naked bike riding as a form of activism is nothing new for Portlanders, whose annual World Naked Bike ride was born out of resistance to Big Oil’s pollution in the fight against climate change and to promote body positivity.

The upcoming demonstration is being coordinated by a branch of the original World Naked Bike Ride. It comes after the organization created an impromptu event following the cancellation of the event in 2024. The group also organized a naked cycling event this year, raising awareness for environmentalism and efforts to combat climate change.

Trump’s decision and past efforts

Trump announced his plan to deploy federal troops to what he called “War ravaged” Portland on Sept. 27. The order comes after the Trump administration federalized Washington, D.C., to combat crime and deployed National Guard members and U.S. Marines to California earlier this year to quell protests over the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Los Angeles. Trump has also announced plans to send military personnel to Memphis and floated the idea of sending them to Chicago, to fight against what he considers rampant crime.

Democrats, including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, have condemned the military operations in mostly major Democratic cities. Pritzker has resisted efforts by the Trump administration to have troops deployed to his state of Illinois.

Why this story matters

A planned naked bike ride protest in Portland highlights local opposition to President Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops, raising questions about civil liberties, protest traditions, and federal intervention in cities.

Federal intervention

Trump’s decision to deploy federally controlled National Guard troops to Portland, described by him as necessary for maintaining law and order, has sparked legal action and vocal opposition from state and local officials.

Protest traditions

The naked bike ride, a longstanding permitted protest in Portland often used to advocate for issues like environmentalism and body positivity, is being repurposed to make a political statement about militarization and federal actions.

Civil liberties and political response

Local leaders and activists assert the deployment is unnecessary and potentially unlawful, intensifying debates about civil liberties, freedom of expression, and the limits of federal power in state affairs.

Get the big picture

Behind the numbers

Estimates in the articles indicate that the annual Portland World Naked Bike Ride usually attracts thousands of participants, with one center source specifically mentioning nearly six thousand riders showing up for previous events.

Community reaction

Local officials, such as Gov. Tina Kotek, and many Portland residents have opposed the deployment of National Guard troops, calling it unnecessary and planning colorful forms of protest like the naked bike ride to express their dissent.

Diverging views

Left-leaning articles focus on the ride as a legitimate, creative expression of protest against what is described as militarization and unnecessary federal intervention, whereas right-leaning articles portray the protest as another example of perceived progressive or anti-Trump activism, often questioning its efficacy and seriousness.
