Authorities in North Carolina say the FBI arrested a man who planned to commit a terror attack on New Year’s Eve. They say the man, identified as 18-year-old Christian Sturdivant, planned with two undercover agents to attack a grocery store and then a fast food restaurant. 

Investigators said Sturdivant had contacted a man posing as a member of the terror group ISIS after finding him on a website supporting the group. The undercover agent said Sturdivant pledged his allegiance to ISIS and then told him he would commit an attack.

They said he later spoke to a second undercover agent, where he went into more detail about his plans. Investigators said he planned the attack “for about a year” but said the idea had been festering for a few years. 

Investigators said he planned to use “knives and hammers” to attack people.

During the investigation, the FBI had previously asked a magistrate judge to involuntarily commit Sturdivant after he said he planned to die by police suicide. However, the judge denied the request, leading agents to arrest Sturdivant. 

Authorities charged Sturdivant with attempting to provide material support for a foreign terrorist organization. They said the charge carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
