Ford is recalling more than 223,000 F-150 pickup trucks in the United States because loose or leaking fuel tanks could create crash or fire risks, federal safety regulators said Saturday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the recall covers 223,472 2023-2027 Ford F-150 vehicles. The agency said improperly secured fuel tanks may leak or detach while the truck is being driven.

A detached fuel tank can become a road hazard and increase the risk of a crash, while a fuel leak can cause an engine stall or raise the risk of fire, the NHTSA said.

Dealers will inspect the fuel tank straps and replace them as needed, free of charge, according to the agency. Ford owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or check their vehicle identification number through NHTSA’s recall database.

The recall could add pressure on Ford and other automakers to tighten supplier oversight and manufacturing quality controls, particularly for high-volume vehicles such as pickups. Industry analysts have said repeated recalls can raise warranty costs, strain dealer service departments and affect consumer confidence in automakers’ quality systems.

The latest action follows several other large Ford recalls this year. Ford recalled 148,663 Mustang vehicles in the United States because wiring harness ground connections could lead to a loss of drive power or disable headlights, windshield washers and other systems. Other reports citing NHTSA data said Ford also recalled about 741,000 trucks and SUVs over a park-system defect and about 1.4 million pickup trucks over a software issue earlier in 2026.

The recall was announced Sept. 12, according to a Reuters report citing NHTSA. Reuters reported that the affected vehicles are being recalled because the tanks may be leaky or improperly secured.
