New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is endorsing progressive democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani in the race for New York City mayor. In the announcement, Hocul stated she needs to ensure the next mayor won’t “surrender one inch” to Trump.
In a New York Times op-ed, Hochul said her top concern was affordability, and Mamdani shares that priority.

Hochul’s priorities
Hocul also made it clear that she believes police must have every resource they need to keep streets and subways safe.
Hochul wrote: “I also shared with him my priorities, making it very clear that our police officers should have every resource to keep our streets and subways safe. I urged him to ensure that there is strong leadership at the helm of the N.Y.P.D. — and he agreed.”
She also urged Mamdani to treat the fight against antisemitism as urgent.
“I’ve been glad to see him meet with Jewish leaders across the city, listening and addressing their concerns directly,” Hochul wrote.
She admitted they don’t agree on everything, but said he has the courage and optimism to lead the city.
“We’ve had our disagreements. But in our conversations, I heard a leader who shares my commitment to a New York where children can grow up safe in their neighborhoods and where opportunity is within reach for every family,” Hochul wrote.
Where the race stands
Right now, Mamdani is leading the polls — ahead of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa.
And Trump has taken notice. He called Mamdani a “communist” and “radical left lunatic,” warning that if Mamdani wins, he will come begging the federal government for money.
In an interview on Fox News, Trump attributed Mandani’s success so far to populist-minded frustrations with politics. He said the New York mayoral race represents a “rebellion against bad candidates.”
Trump also made a comment on Truth Social regarding Hochul’s endorsement, saying Washington will be watching the situation very closely.
In part, Trump wrote, “This is a rather shocking development, and a very bad one for New York City. How can such a thing happen?”
