The rial has been in decline for months, fueled by high inflation and the broader instability in the region. In response, many Iranians have increasingly converted their savings into U.S. dollars or gold.
Sources told The Wall Street Journal that Trump plans to impose stricter sanctions on Iran, including targeting its oil exports, as part of an aggressive strategy to curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and its support for violent proxy groups across the Middle East. This approach mirrors the strategy Trump pursued during his first term, which focused on quickly choking off Iran’s oil revenue and isolating the country diplomatically.
Iran’s oil exports collapsed in early 2020 but reached a six-year high by September of this year, the Journal reported. However, in October, exports sharply declined amid Israeli threats to Iranian oil facilities.
The friction between Trump and Iran largely stems from the 2020 U.S. drone strike that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani, a key figure in Iran’s military leadership.
Former Trump officials told the Journal that the president’s approach to Iran could be swift and unforgiving, noting that the Iranian agents involved in the assassination plot against him and his former national security aides are likely to influence his policies going forward.
