Full Story

Alef Aeronautics, based in San Mateo, California, is working to make flying cars a reality. The company released what it calls the “first-ever video of its kind,” showing a car driving down a road before taking off vertically into the sky.

In another video shared by Alef, the car is seen soaring over a vehicle before safely landing on the ground.

FAA gives company green light for test flights

Alef CEO Jim Dukhovny hopes the video can serve as a proof of concept –– one that demonstrates flying cars are not just a dream but a potential reality.

Alef made headlines in July 2023 when the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granted the company permission to begin its test flights. A year and a half later, the company shared its first footage of those tests.

Dukhovny envisions flying cars as a way to reduce traffic congestion and make travel more efficient. He also says infrastructure for the innovation is already in place, saying, “There are highways in the sky.”

The price tag — and the future

The fully electric flying car comes with a steep price — $300,000. Despite the cost, Alef says it has received thousands of pre-orders.

“Right now, for most people, it’s prohibitively expensive because it’s expensive for us to produce one,” Dukhovny said.

However, the CEO has bigger plans. “The end goal is that it should be at the same level or less expensive than a Toyota Corolla or Ford Focus, because it’s less complex,” he added.

Founded in 2015, Alef Aeronautics continues to push the boundaries of transportation, aiming to bring flying cars into everyday life.
