Statement from CEO of Simon & Schuster
“In addition to being one of the most interesting books ever written about the experience running for President of the United States, the success of 107 DAYS proves what a galvanizing and inspiring cultural figure Kamala Harris is,” Jonathan Karp, the president and CEO of Simon & Schuster said in a statement. “The only memoirs that have had a better first week of sales since 2023 were Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, and Prince Harry.”
Backlash from pre-publish excerpts
While the book is being praised by its publisher, excerpts released prior to “107 Days” release drew backlash from prominent Democrats, including Pete Buttigieg and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, both of whom have pushed back against revelations about them in her book.
Perhaps the most prominent criticism came from former Biden administration officials after an excerpt obtained by The Atlantic disclosed Harris believed she should’ve stepped in sooner to push Biden to drop out of the 2024 race earlier. In retrospect she called the decision to allow the former president to decide on his own was “recklessness.” She also accused administration officials of helping to promote false political attacks against her and undermining her efforts as vice president.
Harris reveals status of relationship with Biden
Some former Biden aides accused her of a poor job performance as vice president, while others defended her critiques. Harris has since eased up on her criticism as media coverage has ensued and on The View revealed that she stays in touch with Biden. She said she continues to have “a good relationship” with the former president and “that is based on mutual respect.”
