Kari Lake, a former news anchor with nearly 30-years of experience could soon lead Voice of America (VOA). President-elect Donald Trump is calling on his vocal ally, Arizona Republican Lake to reform the agency as director.
Presidents do not typically select who serves as director. It also comes just months after the agency swore in a new director to lead VOA.
Lake is a well known name in Arizona households as a former journalist. In more recent years, she has repeatedly echoed Trump’s criticism of media outlets for spreading what they call “fake news.”

The incoming president made the announcement on Truth Social late on Wednesday, Dec. 11. He said Lake will “ensure America’s values of freedom and liberty are broadcast around the world fairly and accurately.”
Voice of America works with the U.S. Agency for Global media. The agency uses radio and broadcast networks to spread news coverage, free from foreign propaganda. VOA was started in 1942 to “combat Nazi propaganda with accurate and unbiased news and information.”
The independently run organization also helps secure press freedom in countries where access is limited. According to the organization, VOA broadcasts to more than 354 million people in 40 different languages.
Lake reacted to the announcement on social media, she said she’s honored to be chosen and thanked Trump for his confidence in her leadership.
“Under my leadership the VOA will excel in its mission: Chronicling America’s achievements worldwide,” Lake said in a post on X.
Trump still has to nominate someone to lead the U.S. Agency for Global Media. Typically, that director then works with an advisory board to pick someone for the VOA position, so right now the announcement is only a suggestion.
Following Lake’s broadcasting career, she turned to politics. She ran for Arizona governor in 2022 with an endorsement from Trump before losing the race.
Most recently, Lake was in one of the most closely watched U.S. Senate races during November’s election. She again fell short of securing the majority of votes.
During Trump’s first term, VOA and his administration often clashed. The president accusing VOA of promoting Chinese propaganda and calling the outlet a “disgrace.”
Trump said he will name the director of the U.S. Agency for Global Media soon.
