“I’m absolutely — as a father — terrified that one day I might wake up and my sons are going to have to deal with the unimaginable,” Federline told Entertainment Tonight in a Tuesday interview.

Federline recalls wedding-day doubts

Federline also revisits a private moment before their 2004 wedding, when Spears allegedly called her ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake.

“We’re at the Fairmont in Santa Monica in one of the bungalows,” Federline said. “I thought she was talking to her mom or maybe having doubts, and she told me she was on the phone with Justin.”

He said Spears told him she needed closure after her 2002 breakup with Timberlake.

“I just kind of stepped back like, ‘Did I just hear you right?’” Federline said. “Immediately I was like, ‘OK, we don’t have to do this.’ I didn’t care if we got married or not.”

A father’s fear

In a chapter obtained by The New York Times, Federline writes that he’s deeply worried about Spears’ well being.

“It’s become impossible to pretend everything’s OK,” he wrote. “From where I sit, the clock is ticking, and we’re getting close to the 11th hour. Something bad is going to happen if things don’t change, and my biggest fear is that our sons will be left holding the pieces.”

Federline also alleges Spears once stood over their sons’ beds with a knife in her hand. “Then she’d turn around and pad off without explanation,” he wrote.

Social media presence

Spears’ social media activity has fueled public speculation for years. She often posts videos of herself dancing alone — usually barefoot, in revealing clothing, and with her hair loose.

Sometimes, she incorporates props like knives, which has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters call her posts expressions of freedom, while others say they reveal deeper instability.

Her captions often read like stream of consciousness reflections. One recent post said:

“There is so much we still don’t know or have yet to discover, that’s how vast and beautiful Mother Nature is!!! … Honor thy mother and father, but always protect your heart. Only honor them if they have sacredly honored you !!! If not, you find a new family.”

Britney’s public fallout

Unbiased. Straight Facts.TM

Britney Spears lived under a court-ordered conservatorship for 13 years, giving her father control over nearly every part of her life until 2021.

Federline and Spears finalized their divorce in 2007, but her life shifted dramatically in 2008 when she lost custody of their children.

That January, Spears refused to hand the boys over after a scheduled visitation and locked herself in a room with one of them. She was later placed on a psychiatric hold, which deemed her a danger to herself or others.

By February 2008 she was under a temporary conservatorship, which granted her father control over her finances, career and personal life. While meant to be temporary, the conservatorship became permanent and wasn’t dissolved until November 2021.

The legal arrangement sparked the #FreeBritney movement and public debates about her mental health.

Conflicting narratives

In her memoir, “The Woman in Me,” Spears said she never struggled with significant substance abuse and accused Federline of keeping their sons from her for weeks at a time.

Federline argues that ending her conservatorship was a mistake. “I pray to God every day that she gets the help that she needs,” he said. “You have two sons right there in front of you who are screaming for a life with you.”

Spears’ team responds

A representative for Spears told E! News that Federline is once again profiting off her name. The statement followed reports that his book release coincides with the end of his child support payments.

Spears reportedly paid Federline $20,000 a month in child support for years. After he gained full custody in 2018, that amount doubled.

“All she cares about are her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and their well-being during this sensationalism,” the rep said.

Federline’s memoir, “You Thought You Knew,” is set for release Oct. 21.
