Hawai’i’s Kīlauea volcano put on another stunning show Sunday, erupting with fountains of lava shooting more than 1,000 feet into the air for almost five straight hours.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the flow covered nearly 80% of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor. That’s a 3,300-foot-wide sea of new rock.

It was the 36th episode in its current series of eruptions, which started on Dec. 23, 2024.

However, it is not the largest eruption of this cycle. Episode 35 last month produced the highest single fountain observed so far during the eruption, spewing lava 1,500 feet into the air, according to the USGS.
