Full story

A local meteorologist lost her job one day after sharing her opinion about a gesture made by Elon Musk during a speech following President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Sam Kuffel, a now-former meteorologist for CBS58 in Milwaukee, posted on Instagram that Musk had made a “Nazi salute” during his speech, which stirred up significant reaction one day before the station announced she was no longer employed.

The gesture that sparked debate

Elon Musk’s speech, delivered after Trump’s inauguration, involved an enthusiastic motion where Musk appeared to grab at his chest, then slung his arm forward, repeating the gesture and telling the crowd, “My heart goes out to you” for their support of President Trump.

The gesture quickly became a topic of discussion as it was interpreted differently by people across the political spectrum. Some viewed it as a harmless gesture, while others, including Kuffel, saw it as a “Nazi salute.”

Kuffel’s social media posts

According to conservative talk radio show host Dan O’ Donnel, Kuffel shared two posts on her Instagram story criticizing Musk’s actions.

“Dude Nazi saluted twice. Twice. During the inauguration,” Kuffel wrote.

Kuffel also shared a meme with the caption, “He’s a Nazi.” The posts quickly caught the attention of both Musk’s supporters and detractors. The controversy surrounding Kuffel’s comments intensified after conservative radio show host Dan O’Donnell shared the screenshots of her posts.

CBS58’s response to the posts

The following day, Kuffel was no longer employed at CBS58. An internal email from the station, which was obtained by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, confirmed her departure but did not explicitly state that the Instagram posts were the reason for her firing.

Public reaction to Kuffel’s firing

Kuffel’s firing has sparked a polarized response online. Supporters of Kuffel’s right to voice her opinion expressed their dismay over her termination.

“Shame on @CBS58 for firing Sam Kuffel for naming @elonmusk’s Nazi salute,” one user wrote on X.

Meanwhile, others defended CBS58’s decision, applauding the station for acting swiftly.

“Trust me, all of the meteorologists I worked with had opinions on current events, they just didn’t share them in public in order to avoid alienating a huge chunk of the audience,” a former radio host wrote on X.

Musk’s gesture under scrutiny

Musk’s gesture has continued to generate debate, with various global figures weighing in. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Musk, stating that the billionaire entrepreneur had been “falsely smeared” and that he had consistently supported Israel’s right to defend itself.

Musk himself has also addressed the controversy, posting on X to condemn the interpretations of his gesture as a Nazi salute.

Continued media analysis of Musk’s gesture

The controversy surrounding Musk’s gesture has sparked continued discussion about the role of political bias in media coverage. A recent episode of Bias Breakdown, a podcast by Straight Arrow News, focused on how media outlets from both the left and right presented different interpretations of Musk’s actions.
