Under the proposed rules, those who do so in the future will be stripped of committee leadership positions and forbidden from fundraising while they’re absent.
The changes have to be passed by the full House before they can take effect. The bill’s author, state Rep. Matt Shaheen, R, says he might modify the legislation before bringing it up for a vote.
But that’s not all. Proposals on the table include lowering the threshold for a quorum down from two-thirds to a simple majority, and even vacating a lawmaker’s seat after seven consecutive days of unexcused absence. They also want to dramatically raise the daily fine assessed on quorum-breakers during those periods.
Media Miss by the right: Trump says he ended war in Congo, but fighting continues
President Donald Trump is taking a victory lap for what he says is the end of a decades-long war in Africa, but experts and locals say that’s not true.
In June, the Trump administration helped facilitate an agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to stop more than three decades of conflict.
“For 35 years, it was a vicious war. Nine million people were killed with machetes. I stopped it. I got it stopped and saved lots of lives,” ABC News reported Trump said Monday.
But on the ground, reality tells a different story. The Associated Press reports that a final peace agreement has stalled, and both sides are accusing the other of violating the June agreement. Fighting has continued despite Trump’s claims, raising doubt about whether the administration’s “end of war” declaration is more spin than substance.
