Ever find yourself watching a movie while also scrolling on your phone? Hollywood is starting to embrace our two-screen habits.
To mark its 15-year anniversary, Blumhouse Productions, the studio behind M3GAN, Annabelle, and Ma, is celebrating with a “Halfway to Halloween” campaign. All three films will return to theaters for one-night-only screenings, starting April 30.
This time, M3GAN comes with a tech twist. Blumhouse is teaming up with Meta to debut “Movie Mate,” a second screen experience that lets viewers chat with an AI M3GAN during the film and unlock behind-the-scenes information in real time.
“The entire experience is designed to leverage Meta’s capabilities to augment and uplevel the ‘second screen’ viewing experience aimed at generating excitement ahead of the release of M3GAN 2.0 on June 27,” according to a media release.
But not everyone is a fan. One person called it “nightmare fuel” and added, “Nobody over the age of twenty wants this.” Another commented, “Allowing a bunch of morons to use their phone during screenings is sure to stop movie theaters from dying out. They found a way to make going to a theater even less appealing.”
The push for second screen experiences is part of a larger trend. Entertainment executives are working to keep up with growing shorter attention spans and our reliance on phones.
Netflix is also embracing second screens. According to the platform’s chief product officer Eunice Kim, ideas include notifications explaining major plot twists or letting viewers vote for contestants in competition shows. The goal is to make the experience more interactive and engaging—even for those looking at their phones.
Meta says this technology is meant to bring people back to theaters. Either way, the future of movie nights might look a lot different.
The Halfway to Halloween screenings kick off nationwide with M3GAN on April 30.
