JACK ALYMER: A PLANNED OFFSHORE WIND FARM IN NEW JERSEY IS FACING A MONTHS-LONG DELAY BECAUSE DEVELOPERS ARE STRUGGLING TO FIND TURBINE BLADES.
THE PROJECT – DUBBED LEADING LIGHT WIND – IS SET TO BE BUILT 40 MILES OFF THE COAST OF LONG BEACH ISLAND-
AND WILL CONSIST OF UP TO 100 WIND TURBINES-
ENOUGH TO PROVIDE ELECTRICITY FOR ABOUT A MILLION HOMES.
BUT POWER COMPANY INVENERGY WAS FORCED TO ASK THE STATE’S BOARD OF PUBLIC UTILITIES EARLIER THIS MONTH TO PAUSE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH LATE DECEMBER-
A REQUEST THAT HAS NOW BEEN GRANTED AMID PROBLEMS WITH THREE DIFFERENT TURBINE SUPPLIERS.
GE VERNOVA WAS THE PROJECT’S FIRST CHOICE-
THE SAME MANUFACTURER WHO HAS SEEN MULTIPLE INCIDENTS THIS YEAR OF THEIR TURBINE BLADES FAILING AND SPILLING DEBRIS INTO THE OCEAN BOTH IN THE U.S. AND ABROAD.
ULTIMATELY THOUGH, GE VERNOVA TOLD DEVELOPERS JUST THREE WEEKS AFTER THE PROJECT WAS APPROVED THAT IT WOULD NOT MANUFACTURE THE TYPE OF TURBINE THEY WANTED TO USE.
THEN A SUBSTITUTE MADE BY THE COMPANY VESTAS WAS DEEMED UNSUITABLE FOR THE PROJECT-
AND THE LONE REMAINING MANUFACTURER – SIEMENS GAMESA RENEWABLE ENERGY – SAID IT WAS SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASING THE COST OF ITS TURBINE OFFERING.
INVENERGY SAYS PAUSING THE PROJECT WILL ALLOW THEM MORE TIME TO COORDINATE WITH SUPPLY CHAIN PARTNERS TO ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY MATERIALS-
AND THEY WILL CONTINUE TO ADVANCE DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES IN THE MEANTIME.
HOWEVER, THIS DELAY MARKS ANOTHER SETBACK FOR NEW JERSEY’S OFFSHORE WIND EFFORTS-
FOLLOWING TWO SCRAPPED PROJECTS LAST YEAR FROM WIND ENERGY GIANT ORSTED DUE TO RISING COSTS.
