Obama, Bush will help plan America’s 250th Anniversary in show of unity

Full story

Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush are teaming up to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. They, along with their spouses Michelle Obama and Laura Bush, will serve as honorary co-chairs of America250, an organization created by Congress to manage the anniversary events.

The initiative aims to demonstrate that people from different political backgrounds can work together despite today’s political divisions. America250 hopes this example of cooperation will be particularly meaningful as the country approaches a contentious presidential election.

The celebration will highlight America as “the oldest democracy in the world” and will feature events in all 50 states and U.S. territories, beginning on July 4, 2026. The first event is scheduled to take place during a baseball game in Milwaukee.

Both the Bushes and Obamas expressed their enthusiasm for the project, describing it as a significant milestone for the country. They view it as an opportunity to reflect on America’s history and values and to consider the nation’s future.

In a statement, the Bushes said, “This milestone is an opportunity to reflect on our history and recommit to our country’s founding values.”

The Obamas stated, “America is not the same country it was 250 years ago — but there are threads that tie us back to the very beginning of it all. Our history plays a big role in shaping the kind of future we hope to create.”
