Full story

A busy stretch of road near President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida, may soon don his name. Palm Beach County commissioners are set to vote on Tuesday, July 8, on a resolution that would rename 4 miles of Southern Boulevard as “President Donald J. Trump Boulevard.”

Why is the name changing?

The move comes after the Florida Legislature passed a law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla, last month, but requires local approval for the honorary signage to be put in place.

The roadway, which runs from the city’s international airport to Mar-a-Lago, will feature honorary signage but maintain its current address as Southern Boulevard for mailing and emergency services. If the resolution is approved, the Florida Department of Transportation will install the signage in the coming weeks.

White House’s response

The White House said that Trump is honored by the renaming of the road.

“The great state of Florida is honoring President Donald J. Trump, whose beautiful Mar-a-Lago Club is a long-standing staple in the Sunshine State,” White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said in a statement to The Hill. “Renaming this road to ‘Donald J. Trump Boulevard’ commemorates his iconic legacy and the historically significant moments that made this President the greatest of all time.”

She added, “The President will always be grateful to Floridians for their unwavering support as MAGA loyalists, who voted for him all three times.”

Trump switched his residency from New York to Florida in 2019.

Not the first roadway to be renamed

Since his first term, several states have renamed roads in honor of Trump, including cities in Montana, Oklahoma and another town in Florida, according to an analysis from USA Today. The analysis also notes that Arizona, Kentucky and Missouri are considering highway name changes to honor Trump following his return to office.
