Full story

Tuesday, Sept. 24, will mark six weeks until Election Day. Pundits and political watchers believe the race for the White House will come down to seven battleground states.

The battleground states are scattered in various parts of the country. They include Arizona and Nevada in the West, Wisconsin and Michigan in the Midwest, and to the South, the race is very close in North Carolina and Georgia. Meanwhile, Pennsylvania is the big prize on the East Coast.

Those states have a total of 93 electoral votes, while the number needed to win the presidency is 270.

A New York Times poll shows former President Donald Trump ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris in Arizona and Georgia. Joe Biden won both of those states back in 2020. The poll also has Trump ahead in North Carolina by a slim margin as the he hopes to hang on to a state that he won in 2020 and 2016.

A new CBS news poll found Harris with a 51% to 49% lead in the key battleground states. Respondents cited three major issues: the economy, inflation and the state of democracy.

RealClearPolitics starts the new week with the top seven battleground states essentially tied at 47.7% each for Trump and Harris. Their aggregate of the latest polls from various organizations shows the candidates within two points of each other in each battleground state.

Looking ahead, Harris will be campaigning in Pennsylvania later this week before heading west to Arizona and Nevada. Trump has stops planned in Pennsylvania and Georgia before going to Michigan later in the week.
