Israeli defense tech giant Rafael Advanced Defense Systems showcased its Typhoon counter-unmanned aircraft system (CUAS) to interested viewers in March, with mixed results. The video, posted on March 31, features the Typhoon on a basic turret firing at a drone, initially missing but successfully hitting it on the second attempt. 

Why does Israel need the Typhoon?

Israel’s Defense Ministry recently announced funding for various weapons systems to counter drone threats from groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, including the Typhoon. The system intercepts threats using a Northrop Grumman 30 mm M-K-44 Bushmaster, capable of firing 200 rounds per minute.

Initially designed for naval use, the test demonstrated the ability to mount and deploy the system on a 20-foot modular platform for rapid deployment in different environments.

The Typhoon tracks, too

Rafael noted that the Typhoon has advanced sensors for effective threat detection and tracking, as well as enhanced stabilization and accuracy, which provide all-weather, 24/7 surveillance and engagement capabilities.

The introduction of the Typhoon aligns with a surge in the defense industry to develop similar solutions, motivated by the realities of combat in Ukraine, where drones have emerged as a significant and unavoidable threat, similar to the challenges Israel faces from drones launched by Iran and its allied groups.
