It’s safe to say that Meta’s reveal of its yet-to-be-released smart glasses didn’t go as planned. The livestreamed event on Wednesday had a number of reported technical difficulties, including a cooking demo that had to be cut short and a call to the glasses failing to even go through.

“I don’t know what to tell you guys,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said. “I keep on messing this up,” as the crowd let out supportive cheers.

Social media users were quick to point out the mishaps, and some even said they felt “really bad for the Meta OS team.” One YouTube user remarked, “Cool!! See you in 10 years when it works : D.”

Price tag and other information

Despite the troubles, the Facebook and Instagram parent company was able to showcase some of the features of its Ray-Ban Display glasses, which include the Meta Neural Band wrist controller, reportedly priced at $799.

The devices will be made available to customers on Sept. 30. 

The integrated system will allow users to swipe through restaurant menus, select items for purchase by pinching their fingers together and also features captioning, translation, calls and text messages that can be sent by voice. Users can see the captions or translations applied to real-time conversations in the inside corner of the right lens.

Despite some users giving Meta jabs about its demos, others were more forgiving and expressed excitement for the glasses’ upcoming release. Others still called the technology “creepy.”

Oakley Meta Vanguard’s also revealed

In addition to the display glasses, Meta also unveiled the Oakley Meta Vanguard, for athletes and those who participate in high-intensity physical training. Features include specialized cameras, louder speakers and extended battery life of up to nine hours. The sports gear also integrates fitness platforms such as Garmin and Strava. The device is set to be released on Oct. 21, and preorders are currently available with a reported price tag of $499.

The announcements come as Meta seeks to rival other artificial intelligence giants, such as OpenAI and Google, along with mixed reality headsets like Apple’s Vision Pro, which currently retails for $3,499.

DIGITIMES Asia reports that Meta is expected to sell more than 100,000 of the new display glasses by the end of this year.
