Fan parties and Target openings

Swifties threw themed watch parties with decorations, food inspired by track titles and outfits that leaned into the glittery showgirl aesthetic. One fan, @alltoopaige, is even going viral after making her own corset to mark the moment.

At some Target stores, fans lined up for midnight openings to snag CDs and vinyl. A few locations went even further, offering friendship bracelet stations — a tradition that has become a hallmark of Swift’s fandom.

And the parties aren’t over. From bar takeovers in New York and Los Angeles to boutique gatherings in South Carolina, Swift-inspired events are filling the weekend calendar.

“Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” will run in theaters from today through Sunday and will give fans an “exclusive world premiere of the music video” for the song “The Fate of Ophelia.”

There will also be behind-the-scenes footage of the video shoot, new lyric videos and more, according to AMC’s website.

A mature tone and possible shade

The songs themselves have sparked just as much conversation as the parties. Many listeners say “The Life of a Showgirl” shows a more mature side of Swift, with lyrics that feel sharper and more personal.

Fans quickly zeroed in on what they believe might be lyrical shade. Some pointed to lines that seem directed at Kayla Nicole — Travis Kelce’s ex, who dated him on and off for five years and has spoken publicly about the hate she’s received from Swift’s fanbase.

In “Opalite,” Swift sings, “You couldn’t understand it, why you felt alone / You were in it for real, she was in her phone / And you were just a pose.”

She continues on, “And don’t we try to love love? / We give it all we got / You finally left the table, and what a simple thought / You’re starving ’til you’re not.”

Others think Swift may have slipped in references to fellow pop star Charli XCX in “Actually Romantic.”

“I heard you call me ‘Boring Barbie’ when the coke’s got you brave,” Swift sings. “High-fived my ex and then said you’re glad he ghosted me / Wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face / Some people might be offended / But it’s actually sweet.”

Mixed reviews online

Not every listener is in love with the new direction. While one X user praised the “late 90s pop/indie sound” and another called the album a “masterpiece,” opinions were more divided on Reddit.

One fan wrote, “Parts of it are nice, but the rest feels like the worst parts of Taylor Swift. She needs a break and people who can tell her no.”

Another added, “The whiplash from all the unserious lyrics and internet slang completely takes me out of the songs.”

Some people thought because of the album title, the production value was missing. “I was 1000% expecting some big band theatrics,” one user wrote. “Missed opportunity there.”

Despite the split reactions, Swift’s hold on her fans remains unmatched. Spotify announced “The Life of a Showgirl” broke a major streaming record within its first 24 hours, becoming the most streamed album in a single day so far in 2025.
