Full Story

The U.S. government is reportedly preparing to shut down all federally operated electric vehicle (EV) charging stations nationwide. In an email obtained by The Verge, the General Services Administration (GSA), which oversees federal buildings and vehicle contracts, referred to the chargers as “not mission critical” and also revealed plans to offload recently acquired EVs from the federal government’s automobile fleet.

How many EV chargers are being shut down?

According to internal communications, GSA employees have been directed to begin shutting down the charging stations, with some regional offices already in the process of doing so. The agency operates several hundred charging stations across the country, providing around 8,000 plugs used by both government-owned EVs and the personal vehicles of federal employees.

How does this compare to the prior administration’s actions?

During the previous administration under President Joe Biden, the GSA had been tasked with transitioning the federal vehicle fleet to electric, ordering over 58,000 EVs, and beginning the installation of more than 25,000 additional charging ports. The agency has stated that it is now working to align with the current administration’s policies.

What happens next?

A specific timeline for the complete shutdown of government EV charging stations has not yet been disclosed. It also remains unclear whether the federally owned electric vehicles the government intends to unload will be resold or stored.
