Lenard McKelvey, better known as Charlamagne Tha God, used his recent Fox News appearance to criticize President Donald Trump, challenge the direction of the Republican Party and send a message to younger voters about the need for change. In a wide-ranging conversation on “My View with Lara Trump,” McKelvey didn’t hesitate to push back on the president’s record while also holding Democrats to account.
“Regardless of who’s in the White House, that person represents all of America,” McKelvey said. “And I reserve the right to criticize both parties.”

Holding both sides accountable
McKelvey, co-host of “The Breakfast Club,” acknowledged he’s been just as critical of former President Joe Biden in the past because he “didn’t think he was doing a good job.”
That bipartisan skepticism shaped much of the conversation, as McKelvey argued that many Americans, especially younger voters, are tired of political loyalty that doesn’t translate into meaningful change. He called for a focus on real outcomes rather than party branding.
“Let’s just focus on the people who are putting ideas out there that are truly going to put more money in your pocket and truly make you feel safe in this country,” he said.
Warning of a GOP shift
While discussing the future of the Republican Party, McKelvey offered his own analysis of internal dynamics he believes are being overlooked. He described what he sees as a “political coup” happening, where traditional conservatives may be preparing to take back control.
“I think there’s a political coup going on in the Republican Party that people aren’t paying attention to,” he said.
He believes this shift is gaining traction in part because of the unresolved tensions around the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
“I think this Epstein thing is going to be a way for traditional conservatives to take their party back,” McKelvey explained. “The MAGA base isn’t letting this issue go, and for the first time, they know they can probably take their party back and not piss off the MAGA base.”
A cautionary tale from the left
McKelvey also suggested Republicans may try to fall into the same trap he believes Democrats did after the Obama years, trying to replicate a singular political figure instead of evolving with voters.
“Barack Obama was a one-of-one, once-in-a-lifetime political juggernaut,” he said. “Ever since Barack Obama, every Democrat has tried to be Barack Obama. That’s the mistake Republicans are going to make with Donald Trump.”
Trump, he added, is also “a once-in-a-lifetime, one-of-one political juggernaut,” but attempting to mimic his approach won’t work long-term.
Trump responds, Charlamagne fires back
The president didn’t take kindly to the criticism. On Sunday, Trump responded on Truth Social, calling McKelvey a “racist sleazebag” who “has no idea what words are coming out of his mouth” and “knows nothing about me or what I have done.”
Trump also touted claims about ending multiple global conflicts, including “a 31-year bloodbath between the Republic of the Congo and Rwanda.”
On Instagram, McKelvey posted a screenshot of Trump’s statement alongside a satirical clip from “The Daily Show.” In the video, comedian Jessica Williams mocked the Epstein situation, saying, “Trump is trying to throw every Black person he can think of in front of the scandal to distract us! First he released the Martin Luther King Jr. files, then he accused Obama of treason, and now he wants to prosecute Oprah and Beyoncé?”
In his caption follow-up slide, McKelvey said:
“Anyway, yes I believe there is a political coup happening in the Republican Party and I appreciate @laraleatrump having me on #MyView last night to talk about that amongst many other things. Let’s discuss…”
The Fox News appearance comes at a high point in McKelvey’s media career. In June, iHeartRadio announced that The Breakfast Club had surpassed one billion downloads — a milestone for the syndicated radio show known for its unfiltered political interviews and cultural commentary.
