Full story

President Donald Trump is expected to attend the Kennedy Center’s opening night of “Les Misérables” on Wednesday, June 11. He told Fox News Digital earlier this month that the show is one of his favorites.

Trump said he enjoys the music and story, and even suggested the show’s run could be extended. The Kennedy Center is currently scheduled to host the production from June 11 through July 13.

He won’t be attending alone –– First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Vance’s wife are expected to join. Vance and his wife were booed during a National Symphony Orchestra concert at the center in March.

Online reactions question Trump’s favorite musical

Some social media users expressed disbelief that “Les Misérables” is truly one of Trump’s favorite shows.

The production tells the story of a man named Valjean who is imprisoned for stealing bread to feed his starving family. Once released, he attempts to rebuild his life in a society that refuses to accept him.

One Reddit user wrote, “To [Trump], it’s a cautionary tale about the dangers of empathy and of not being hard enough on people who steal bread from the rich, and about how not cracking down early on revolutions let’s [sic] them grow.”

A user on X suggested, “He probably thinks Javert is the good guy.”

Javert is the main antagonist, a police officer relentlessly pursuing Valjean for breaking parole. He believes the law should be upheld at all costs.

Cast members plan to protest by sitting out

As the curtain prepares to rise on opening night, some of the show’s performers are planning to bow out.

According to CNN, the entire cast was given the option not to perform due to Trump’s attendance. Ten to 12 of them reportedly chose to sit out. They include both major cast members and those of the ensemble.

Trump will also headline a VIP fundraiser at the Kennedy Center Wednesday, according to ABC News, which received an invitation. The highest sponsorship tier is priced at $2 million, with some sponsorship tiers including photo opportunities with the president.

Leadership changes cause further backlash

The Kennedy Center has faced recent internal shakeups. Trump removed the long-standing director, replaced multiple board members, and appointed himself as chairman. He also replaced several Biden appointees from the board, leading to more resignations across the organization.

Several performers and shows have since canceled upcoming appearances at the center. Among them are “Hamilton” and actress Issa Rae

Sources tell Reuters that subscription sales and individual tickets have dropped. Year-on-year subscription revenue fell 36% to $2.8 million as of early June. Theater subscriptions were down 82%.

Security measures in effect

The Kennedy Center’s website notes increased security measures for Wednesday’s event. The venue will be closed to the general public, and all ticket holders are advised to arrive early and expect security screenings for both people and vehicles.

Context corner

The Kennedy Center, founded as a national cultural institution commemorating President John F. Kennedy, has traditionally been considered apolitical. Recent changes reflect a new dynamic, as presidential involvement has usually been limited to board appointments. The center’s origins trace back to bipartisan efforts in the late 1950s and 1960s, emphasizing the importance of national support for the arts.

Do the math

Reported figures include a 36% decrease in overall subscription revenue, bringing it down to $2.8 million, and an 82% drop in theater subscriptions. Tiers for the "Les Misérables" fundraiser include ticket packages costing from $100,000 to $2 million, which grant donors special access and privileges at the event, illustrating both lost and sought-after revenue streams.

Policy impact

The Trump administration has moved to cancel millions in humanities grants and has proposed eliminating institutions like the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities. Executive orders have targeted other federally supported cultural institutions. These policies could affect arts organizations' funding, accessibility and programming for audiences and creators nationwide.

Bias comparison

  • Media outlets on the left frame Trump’s involvement with the Kennedy Center largely as a disruptive politicization and cultural overreach, emphasizing cancellations and resignations.
