Full story

The U.S. is sending nearly 200 troops to Israel to help support the ceasefire introduced by the White House late last month. The troops are part of a team that includes partner nations, nongovernmental organizations and groups in the private sector.

Troops to Israel

Officials told The Associated Press that U.S. Central Command will establish a “civil-military coordination center” in Israel to help ensure the flow of humanitarian aid. The American units will also help with logistics and security in the area.

The U.S. troops called upon will have expertise in several categories, including transportation, planning, security, logistics and engineering, according to an anonymous U.S. official.

None of those troops will enter Gaza.

Another U.S. official said the troops will come from all over the globe. Soldiers have reportedly already begun arriving and will continue into the weekend.

It’s the first signal of how the U.S will monitor this latest ceasefire.

Peacekeeping

The U.S. has supported United Nations peacekeeping efforts over the last decade, including being the largest contributor to the budget.

As part of that plan, America also provides military training and logistical support.

The U.S. has provided military observers, similar to those heading to Israel, to other countries, including Liberia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and even the Middle East.
