Is Elon Musk getting an office in the West Wing? President Donald Trump addressed that question Monday, Jan. 20, after reports about Musk, the richest man in the world, and his future in the White House.
Musk, who Trump picked to lead the newly-formed Department of Government Efficiency, also known as DOGE, was initially said to have been given an office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is next door to the White House.

However, The New York Times reported Musk likely secured an office in the West Wing, typically for Oval Office and White House executive staff.
According to sources for the Times, Musk spent days “signaling his desire to be physically close to Trump” in the White House and Trump agreed to the idea.
What did Trump say?
However, while signing an executive order for DOGE, Trump denied the report when asked whether Musk would be in the West Wing.
“No, he’s getting an office for about 20 people that we’re hiring to make sure these get implemented,” Trump said.
Has Musk overstayed his welcome?
Earlier this month, Times reporter Maggie Haberman said on the “On with Kara Swisher” podcast that even though Trump and Musk have seemingly become close, Trump speaks differently behind closed doors.
“Trump does complain a bit to people that Musk is around a lot,” Haberman said.
The Times’ recent report also said Musk now has an “all-access” badge to the White House, as he aims to cut at least a trillion dollars in government spending.
Before speaking at Trump’s inauguration, Musk spent time at the Washington headquarters of his company, SpaceX, where his DOGE team has been the past few months.
Early trouble for DOGE?
DOGE is already hitting a few roadblocks. Public interest law firm National Security Counselors filed a lawsuit against DOGE. The law firm claimed DOGE failed to meet transparency and oversight requirements.
The lawsuit comes after Vivek Ramaswamy is now expected to run for Ohio governor. Ramaswamy was set to co-lead DOGE with Musk.
