The new year will bring new price hikes for YouTube TV customers. Starting on Jan. 13, the video platform will increase the monthly subscription cost by 14%, from $72.99 to $82.99 per month.

The company attributed the price hike to the rising cost of content. It sent an e-mail to subscribers saying it does not make these decisions lightly and realizes it will impact viewers. The latest service price increase was in March 2023.

In 2017, YouTube TV cost just $35 per month at its debut. It offered local TV live-streaming and popular networks like ESPN and TNT.

The Alphabet-owned platform scored a big victory in the sports world by acquiring the rights to the NFL’s Sunday Ticket in 2023. The company pays $2 billion annually for those rights. DirecTV previously owned those rights.

Over the past decade, viewers turned to streaming services like YouTube TV and moved away from traditional cable and satellite TV plans. The movement is known as cord-cutting. Several Americans have done so due to better prices and greater channel selection.

Apple TV, Disney+ and Paramount+ also raised their rates recently and offered new service tiers.
