22 young Americans sue Trump on climate actions: ‘A death sentence for my generation’

Twenty-Two young Americans filed Lighthiser v. Trump on May 29 in Montana federal court over climate-related executive orders. The lawsuit challenges a set of executive orders issued by the president which proclaimed an energy crisis and promoted rapid fossil fuel expansion, contending that these actions surpass the limits of presidential powers.

Plaintiffs, mostly from Montana, contend these orders violate their Fifth Amendment rights by worsening climate harm and blocking clean energy projects. Named plaintiff Eva Lighthiser expressed that the executive actions supporting fossil fuels jeopardize the health and future prospects of her generation.

The youth seek a permanent injunction to stop these orders, asserting the executive branch must act within constitutional limits to protect their rights.
