Harmful bleaching now affects 84% of the world’s coral reefs in the worst recorded event, according to the International Coral Reef Initiative. The average sea surface temperature reached a record 20.87 degrees Celsius, jeopardizing marine biodiversity, including 25% of marine species.

Scientists stress the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to combat coral bleaching and preserve ocean ecosystems.

Mark Eakin stated that heat stress from climate change might prevent coral recovery and lead to severe ecological consequences.
