Abortion pills will be controlled substances in Louisiana soon, doctors have concerns

Doctors in Louisiana fear that reclassifying mifepristone and misoprostol will delay access to these drugs for managing miscarriages and severe bleeding. The reclassification means possessing these abortion pills without a prescription could result in fines up to $5,000 and jail time of one to five years.
Mifepristone and misoprostol are now labeled as “Schedule IV drugs,” similar to the opioid tramadol, raising concerns about accessibility and safety. Just last year, around two-thirds of abortions in the U.S. were conducted through medications.
