The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis for not calling special elections for two state legislature seats that are vacant. The vacancies were created by the resignations of State Rep. Joel Rudman and State Sen. Randy Fine, who left to run for congressional seats.

The ACLU argues that DeSantis’ failure to call special elections violates the state’s constitution and deprives voters of representation.

Past governors have acted quickly to fill vacancies, and the ACLU claims DeSantis’s delay is both troubling and illegal, according to staff attorney Nicholas Warren.
