President Donald Trump has slashed hundreds of millions of dollars in medical-scientific research grants so far this year, including severe cuts to cancer research. Now, however, Trump is promising $50 million in new funding for the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) childhood cancer data initiative.

The initiative was launched under Trump’s first term, but the $50 million investment marks a doubling of the program’s current budget.

The White House aims to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the new funding, with part of the investment earmarked for researchers working on how to apply AI to childhood cancer research, according to CNN.

The World Health Organization estimates that around 400,000 children under 19 years old are diagnosed with cancer every year around the globe.
