A class-action lawsuit was filed for detainees at the “Alligator Alcatraz” center who lack access to attorneys and cannot contest their detention, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. The lawsuit alleges there are no protocols for confidential attorney communication, preventing legal representation for over 1,000 detainees, as reported by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Detainees face horrific conditions, including overcrowding and lack of basic needs, leading to descriptions of the facility as an “internment camp” by lawmakers, according to The New Republic.

The ACLU emphasized that the government’s actions violate First and Fifth Amendment rights and called the situation a “moral failure” in their reports.
