Americans are increasingly turning to the use of unapproved chemicals sold to them as a way to “build muscle, rejuvenate skin and extend life,” The Associated Press (AP) reports. The AP attributes part of that trend to the increasing popularity of GLP-1 medications, which are approved for weight loss with a doctor’s prescription.
But online influencers have been promoting unapproved chemicals in place of those medications, or even pitching them as superior alternatives. The AP warns that these chemicals are not approved for human use, and says that much of the evidence available comes only from testing on rats. Some of the agents are already banned in international sporting events.

The chemicals rely heavily on the use of peptides, the tiny building blocks of proteins. Some vendors are charging high prices for these peptides, including one the AP says is selling products for up to $600 per item.
Some professionals also warned about possible allergic reactions to the unapproved substances.
