Australia declines China’s offer to ‘join hands’ on Trump tariffs

Australia rejected China’s appeal to cooperate against U.S. tariffs on April 10, emphasizing negotiations with the U.S. over alliance with China. Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles stated, “We don’t want to see a trade war between America and China,” rejecting the notion of forming a common cause with China.

Chinese Ambassador Xiao Qian urged Australia to respond jointly against U.S. actions, arguing that it’s the only way to counter U.S. behavior. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized that Australia would pursue its national interests while seeking new trade opportunities beyond the U.S.
