Buying Greenland could cost as much as $700 billion: Report

If the U.S. wants to move forward with buying Greenland, it could come with a steep price tag. An NBC News report estimated the 800,000-square-mile territory could be worth up to $700 billion, if Denmark were ever open to selling it.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly framed acquiring Greenland as a national-security priority to prevent Russia and China from gaining influence over Greenlanders and its 27,000 miles of coastline.

Options under consideration include outright purchase, a compact of free association, expanded military presence, or coercive measures. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance have met with Danish and Greenland officials in Washington, D.C.

Officials from Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly said Greenland is not for sale. A Verian poll from 2025 showed roughly 85% of respondents opposed a sale.

The U.S. currently maintains a small footprint in the territory at Pituffik Space Base.
